You know...we live in a fast-paced society where everything we want, we expect it to appear instantaneously. We don't even "pop" popcorn the old-fashioned way. Everything goes into the microwave regardless of the potential hazards those waves may cause. WE WANT EVERYTHING NOW!! Well, the same is so true with entrepreneurship and business ownership.
So often I speak with newly formed owners of companies and I ask them, "What did you do for your business today?" I usually get the same responses, "Well, I sent out marketing letters", or "I made a few networking calls", or "I am thinking of more strategies for marketing." While all these answers are "good", were you actually PRODUCTIVE or just BUSY? There's a huge difference.
Let's think on this for just a moment: "Did you take the time to make sure those marketing letters would actually reach your targeted population? Do you even know your target population? See, a marketing letter is not a productive strategy for your business if it's going to the wrong people - people who will never need or even want your service. In sending out those letters, you were merely BUSY not PRODUCTIVE.
Now, there 's also this thing of being a professional MULTI-TASKER. Being a multi-tasker is wonderful, as long as you are accomplishing something. How many of those "tasks" were actually completed? How many of those "tasks" actually involved your business to some degree? See, busy people are multi-taskers. Productive people remain focused on the task at hand - focusing until completion.
When you try to do too many things at one time, you are being counter-productive - meaning: NOTHING GETS DONE!!! You just looked busy but didn't accomplish a thing.
One sure way to be productive and not just busy is to take time at the beginning of your week and go over everything that needs to be done; every appointment needing to be kept and every phone call needing to be made. In other words...YOU NEED A CALENDARING SYSTEM. Mine is online through my computer and my smart phone. However, if you are not computer savvy, then the old-fashioned calendar book will suffice. Guess what??? They are still sold at your local Wal-Mart and Office Depot stores. So, NO EXCUSE.
I guess the jest of all this is simple - know your business; know your industry; know your target population. In a nutshell, it takes passion, commitment, fortitude, good judgment and RESEARCH to not only successfully launch a business, but to successfully maintain that business.
Find out what works in your niche and stick to it. Don't change what works. Rome wasn't built in a day but when it was finally complete, some of those Roman ruins are still visible as historic landmarks to this day.
Take your time, keep quiet about your ideas, and learn how to be productive and not just busy.
A busy day is EXHAUSTING.... but a productive day is long....not exhausting....major difference.
I promise you will see a difference in your day by staying productive. I can't wait to see all these new businesses popping up. It does my heart good to see so many of you leaving behind legacies for your children and your grandchildren. After all, isn't this what it's all about?
